Camino 1.5 Release Notes - Complete

The complete log of new features and bug fixes in Camino 1.5 since the release of Camino 1.0.

Changes in Camino 1.5

  • General
    • The warning that appears when attempting to launch a copy of Camino while another copy is already running will now close properly.
    • Built-in keyboard shortcuts for certain functions (e.g. for Bookmark Bar items) will no longer override menu shortcuts chosen by users.
    • Pages are no longer truncated when navigating back to them from a page which showed the pop-up blocker.
    • Images dragged from the Desktop to a Camino window will now display properly.
    • Camino no longer remembers the size and position of the view source window as the default size and position for new browser windows.
    • On Mac OS X 10.3.9, Script Editor will no longer complain that it cannot open Camino’s AppleScript dictionary, and all AppleScripts that interact with Camino will work just as they do on Mac OS X 10.4.
  • Bookmarks
    • Command-key shortcuts for bookmarks in the Bookmark Bar no longer triggered when modifier keys are also held down.
    • The “Use as Dock Menu” context menu item is now disabled when the History collection is selected.
    • When bookmarking a page or a set of pages, pages with data: or javascript: URLs will no longer be bookmarked.
    • When importing bookmarks from Firefox, Camino will use the profile that was changed most recently if there are multiple profiles.
  • Downloading
    • Files listed in the Downloads window can now be emptied from the Trash.
  • Localization
    • The license agreement that appears when the disk image is mounted will now appear in the language of the system, if available.
  • Preferences
    • The date displayed in the “Show Cookies…” sheet now respects the system date preferences more accurately.
  • Privacy & Security
    • Updating a Keychain item with new information will now properly update the existing item instead of sometimes creating a second item.
    • Camino now stores and accesses different credentials (in the Keychain) for different http Auth realms on the same host.
    • Usernames saved in the Keychain are now treated in a case-insensitive manner.
    • When accessing a Keychain item created by Safari, Camino no longer alters the item so that Safari cannot read it, and if Camino accesses an altered item again, it will restore Safari's ability to access that item.
    • The list of sites for which Camino will never save a password is now a .plist file instead of a binary file.
    • Showing “Installed Plug-ins” will no longer cause some security warning preferences to be reset.
    • When Camino asks to read the Keychain for a certain site, choosing “Deny” now functions properly.
  • Tabs
    • Quitting while saved pages are being restored no longer forgets those that are in the process of loading.
    • Pages will now be restored properly after a crash.
    • Open pages are now remembered more frequently in case Camino quits unexpectedly.
    • Clicking a link from an external application which is already open in Camino will now show the existing tab or window and reload it.
    • When a link from an external application launches Camino and there are saved pages to be restored, the link will now respect the “Links opened by other applications” preference.
  • User Interface
    • Pressing the Esc key in the location bar of a blank page no longer displays “about:blank.”
  • Web Page Interaction
    • Further improved ad-blocking.
    • Adding a site to the Pop-up Exceptions List now works properly for Flash-based pop-ups.
    • The list of pop-up windows that can be displayed for a given page is now cleared properly.
    • Modifier keys now generate key events.

Changes in Camino 1.1 Beta

  • General
    • Fixed a bug where the scrollbar would sometimes redraw incorrectly.
    • Clicking on the feed icon in the location bar now works properly on sites using Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs).
    • If Camino quits unexpectedly and is relaunched, it will provide the option to restore the pages that had previously been open.
    • The site icon for local files now acts as a proxy for the file and behaves in accordance with Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines.
    • “Force Reload” (Command-Shift-R) now forces a page’s site icon to be reloaded from the server as well.
    • Icons for missing local files are now displayed properly in the location bar and the Bookmarks Manager.
  • Bookmarks
    • The “Keyword” field has been renamed “Shortcut” to more accurately reflect its function.
  • Downloading
    • Added “Space” and “Separator” items to the list of toolbar elements for the Downloads window toolbar.
    • Camino no longer hangs when downloading files to the Desktop with Quicksilver running.
  • Preferences
    • Restored the preference to disable plug-ins, which was removed in Camino 1.0.
    • Added a preference to restore pages that were open when the user last quit Camino.
    • The “Pop-up Exceptions List” now includes the ability to allow or deny pop-up windows from specific sites.
  • Privacy & Security
    • Camino now supports Kerberos authentication, most commonly seen on internal networks.
    • Camino will use Keychain passwords saved without a port number if no password with a specific port is available. This improves compatibility with Keychain passwords stored by Safari.
    • “Reset Camino…” now removes any passwords in the Keychain that were created by Camino 1.1a2 or later.
    • Camino now prompts the user before automatically filling a form with a saved username and password from the Keychain if the domain name that the form will be submitted to has changed since the password was saved.
    • The pop-up blocker now provides the ability to show a pop-up once, show all future pop-ups from a site, or prevent the display of any future pop-ups from a site.
  • Tabs
    • If an external application tries to open a link in Camino, and it is already open, Camino will show the existing tab or window instead of opening a new one.
  • User Interface
    • Long pages titles will now properly display in the title bar with an ellipsis (…) in the middle.
    • The pop-up blocker’s close button is shown with the correct appearance when the mouse pointer is over it, and the button itself is now more visible.
  • Web Page Interaction
    • Ad-blocking has been further improved.
    • Camino no longer opens a new window or tab when the user command-clicks a mailto: link.
    • Camino can now learn and ignore words when checking spelling in text fields in web pages.
    • Camino now includes support for “click-to-play” blocking of Flash animations, based on Flashblock from http://flashblock.mozdev.org/.

Changes in Camino 1.1 Alpha 2

  • General
    • Camino no longer displays wyciwyg:// strings for generated URLs.
    • Improved performance when deleting a large number of bookmarks.
    • Status bar text generated by mousing over links now takes precedence over status bar messages generated by network traffic.
    • Fixed a crash related to using "Find" immediately after switching to Camino.
    • Camino now uses the active user interface localization for its user agent locale.
    • When the accept-language string contains only “generic” English, Camino now adds US English to the string in order to work around broken web servers.
    • When viewing a file on a local disk, Camino now uses the file's actual icon as the site icon.
  • Bookmarks
    • Disabled the '+' and sort menu-buttons in bookmark collections where they are not relevant.
    • When viewing a context menu on the folder that is set as your Dock menu, the “Use as Dock Menu” item will now be checked.
    • When the "Use as Dock Menu" item is checked, choosing it will now reset your Dock Menu to the default folder.
    • Camino now prevents entry of spaces in bookmark keywords.
    • Items in the bookmarks bar now darken momentarily when opened by clicking or by using the keyboard shortcuts.
    • Camino now supports the import of iCab 3 bookmarks.
    • Camino now makes a backup copy of the bookmarks file on startup if the file is not corrupted.
    • Camino now tries to use a backup copy of the bookmarks file if the original bookmarks file appears to be corrupt on startup.
    • When Camino restores bookmarks from a backup, it displays an alert with details on how to send information to the Camino team.
    • Context and action menu items are no longer disabled when the first item in History search results is selected.
    • When dragging bookmarks from an external source (e.g. Safari) into the Bookmark Manager, Camino now copies the bookmarks instead of moving them.
    • Added a "Reveal in Bookmark Manager" contextual menu item for bookmarks in the Bookmark Bar, inline search results, and the Top Ten List.
    • The last-used location for the Add Bookmarks sheet is now remembered across launches.
    • Command-F now focuses the bookmarks search field in the Bookmarks Manager.
    • Fixed an issued introduced in Camino 1.1a1 which sometimes prevented bookmarking single pages.
    • Bookmark keywords are now recognized case-insensitively.
  • Preferences
    • Polished the layout and terminology in each preference pane.
    • The proportional font hint text in the Appearance preference pane now matches the serif or sans-serif font choice.
  • Privacy & Security
    • The buttons in the dialog for connecting to a site whose identity can't be verified are now labeled "Always Accept," "Don't Connect" and "Accept Once."
    • If a web page contains multiple login forms, Camino will now auto-fill your username and password in all of them.
    • Camino can now read passwords stored in the Keychain by Safari and will use Safari passwords if no passwords have been saved for the site by Camino.
      • Camino versions older than 1.1a2 will not be able to read passwords modified or created in Camino 1.1a2 or later versions.
      • Using “Reset Safari” will delete any passwords saved by Camino 1.1a2 or later that have been used in Safari.
    • Camino now distinguishes between HTTP auth passwords and web form passwords.
  • Tabs
    • Camino now has a preference to save a list of all active tabs and windows on quit and will periodically save the list during browsing.
  • User Interface
    • Audited the validation of toolbar buttons and menu items. The changes include:
      • The "Add" button in the "Edit Exceptions List..." sheet in the Web Features preference pane is now properly validated at all times.
      • Text-only back and forward toolbar buttons are now enabled and disabled correctly.
      • The "View Source", "Fill Form", and "Email Page Location" menu items and toolbar buttons are now disabled for all about: locations.
      • Various menu items and toolbar buttons are now disabled when viewing binary content, like images.
      • The "Print" toolbar button is now validated correctly.
      • Relevant menu items are now disabled when sheets or dialogs are frontmost.
    • The "Zoom" widget in the title bar and the “Zoom” menu item now zoom the window to fit the current page's content instead of making the window full-screen. Holding down the shift key toggles the old behavior of maximizing to fill the screen.
    • Camino now uses a native search field in the Bookmarks Manager.
    • Added alternate menu items to the "Reload" and "Reload All" menu items which perform a "Force Reload" when the shift key is pressed.
    • Dragging a bookmark, a folder or a tab group from the bookmarks bar to the tab bar now respects the shift key toggle for loading in the background.
    • The search field on the toolbar and the search item in the context menu now respect the command key toggle for opening in a new tab/window and the shift key toggle for loading in the background.
    • Menu items for recently visited pages in the History menu now respect the command key toggle for opening in a new tab/window and the shift key toggle for loading in the background.
    • Tab groups in the Bookmarks menu now respect the command key toggle for opening in a new tab/window and the shift key toggle for loading in the background.
    • Closing the bookmark info panel with the escape key now cancels any incomplete edits.
    • The text of certain security dialogs now contains “Camino” instead of “(null)”.
    • The first item in each preference pane is no longer focused unless it is a text field or the user has Full Keyboard Access activated.
  • Web Page Interaction
    • Fixed an issue in Camino 1.1a1 where pop-ups were sometimes blocked without showing the pop-up blocker.
    • Control-clicking on a word in a text field now selects the word, so the cursor no longer has to be in a misspelled word for spelling suggestions to work.

Changes in Camino 1.1 Alpha 1

  • General
    • Camino displays an error dialogue at launch on Mac OS X 10.2.x, since Camino 1.1 requires Mac OS X 10.3 or newer.
    • Adding a folder in the Bookmarks Manager no longer causes Camino to beep.
    • Writing Spotlight metadata files for Bonjour bookmarks could generate thousands of files on networks with many Bonjour hosts. Camino now disables metadata writing for Bonjour bookmarks.
    • Camino now handles .ftploc files.
    • The “View Image” context menu item now uses the tabbed browsing preference semantics.
    • Local SVG files can now be selected in the Open File dialog.
    • “Copy Address” on mailto: links with multiple addresses now captures all addresses.
    • The “Send Link” menu item now sends URLs in angle brackets.
    • Single-click in search fields now only enters a caret instead of selecting any existing text.
    • Added a “Search” item to the context menu, which searches for the selected text using the default search engine.
    • Option-return or Option-enter in the location bar now downloads the entered url.
    • Camino can now be used with a custom profile location specified at runtime, enabling “portable Camino” or running Camino from a memory stick.
    • The Top Ten List now ignores all about: URIs.
    • Fixed some cases, most notably when loading the home page, where the location bar would remain focused after loading a page.
    • Plain-text URLs can now be loaded by dragging to the tab bar.
    • Third-party mice that emulate cmd-click will now properly send cmd-click to bookmark items in menus.
    • The page proxy (site icon) can now be dragged to Mail.app under Mac OS X 10.4.
    • Improved address auto-completion performance by approximately 40%.
    • Fixed an issue where the entire tab bar was redrawing aggressively.
    • Better handling of location and .url files with upper-case extensions.
    • The “Open URL in Camino” service now accepts bookmark keywords.
  • Bookmarks
    • Command-1 through Command-9 are now shortcuts for opening the first 9 bookmarks or tab groups in the Bookmark Bar.
    • Dragging of bookmarks into the Address Book collection of the Bookmarks Manager is now disabled.
    • Keywords on bookmark folders can now be edited in the outline view.
    • “Copy Locations to Clipboard” in the Bookmarks view now works when folders are selected.
    • Bookmark keyword searches now properly encode ampersand and other characters.
    • The search field now gets initial focus when opening the Bookmarks Manager, for quick searching.
    • Improved the tabbing cycle in bookmarks and history.
    • Renamed the the left pane in the Bookmarks Manager from ‘Groups’ to ‘Collections’.
    • Double-clicking on a tab group in Bookmarks Manager now opens the bookmarks.
    • It is now possible to delete a bookmark folder that is being used as the Dock menu.
    • It is now possible to un-check the “Dock Menu” check box in the information panel for a folder that is being used as the Dock menu.
    • The default title for new tab groups now includes the number of tabs.
    • The “Bookmark Current Page…” menu item and the “Bookmark Page” toolbar button always bookmark the current page.
    • The “Show/Hide All Bookmarks” menu item and toolbar button now act as a toggle in all situations.
    • Bookmarks loaded via keywords can now create pop-ups if necessary (e.g., BugMeNot)
    • The “Bookmark Current Page…” sheet now pre-selects the Bookmarks Bar collection by default.
    • Importing bookmarks now shows a progress dialog during the import and is significantly faster.
    • Added “Bookmark Current Tabs as Tab Group…” menu item with the shortcut of Command-Option-K.
    • Menu separators in the Bookmarks Manager now have the appearance of menu separators.
  • Downloading
    • Added an optional “Trash” button to the Downloads window toolbar, which moves the selected download to the Trash.
    • The Command-period key combination now cancels downloads when the Downloads window has focus.
    • Added new options for removing successful downloads automatically (when the download has completed, when quitting Camino, or manually) from the download history list.
    • The “Download Completed” message now reports the actual file size even if the size was unknown while downloading.
    • The Downloads window is now always brought to the front when a download starts.
    • The Command-Shift-D keyboard shortcut now opens the Downloads window when it is closed, focuses the Downloads window when it is not the active window, and closes the Downloads window when it is the active window.
    • Optimized performance of the “Clean Up” option in the Downloads window.
  • Preferences
    • Polished the layout and terminology in each preference pane and simplified the Tabs preferences.
    • Camino now has an option in the Appearance preference pane to make all websites always use your font choices.
    • Added options to control whether tabbing inside a web page selects text fields, other form elements, links, or some combination of the three.
    • “Auto-fill passwords in web forms” in Privacy preference pane is now validated and enabled or disabled properly.
    • Camino now has an option in the Privacy preference pane to allow the user to choose personal certificates when required.
    • The toolbar items for each preference pane now displays a tooltip.
    • Certain checkboxes in the preferences will receive the mixed state look when the applicable preference has been mapped to a different value manually.
    • Fixed a problem where “Don’t show this warning again” checkboxes didn’t work in certain situations.
    • Camino now blocks pop-up windows by default.
  • Privacy & Security
    • The cookie exceptions list and cookie notification sheet now have options for session cookies.
    • The blocked pop-up notification now appears underneath the toolbars.
    • Unblocking a blocked pop-up now shows the blocked pop-up in addition to adding the site to the exceptions list.
    • It is now possible to exclude Camino’s Bookmarks from Spotlight indexing by adding ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Camino to the list in the Privacy tab of the Spotlight preference pane in the System Preferences.
    • “Reset Camino” now properly resets minimized windows.
  • Tabs
    • Added tab jumpback: when creating a new foreground tab via cmd-click, forcing links that would open new windows into new tabs instead, or the “Open in New Tab” context menu item, Camino will remember the launching tab such that when the new tab is closed, Camino will jump back to the launching tab if the user has not manually changed tabs.
    • Added a preference to force links that would open new windows to open in new tabs instead (“Single Window Mode”).
    • The empty space on the tab bar now has a context menu.
    • View Source now opens in a new window regardless of tabbed browsing preferences.
    • Added a “Reload All Tabs” item in the tab context menu (when option is held down).
    • Blank tabs opened by downloads are now closed automatically.
    • Hovering over a tab widget once again displays a tooltip with the page’s title.
  • User Interface
    • The toolbar search field is now resizable and can be collapsed (hidden).
    • All toolbar button and menu item validation has been audited. The changes include:
      • The Stop and Reload toolbar buttons now properly update their state at all times.
      • The Reload toolbar button now remains enabled while pages are loading.
      • The toolbar buttons for “Close Tab,” “Trash,” and “Clean Up” are now disabled when Camino is not in the foreground.
    • Tooltips for the “Back” and “Forward” toolbar buttons show the title and URL of the page they go to.
    • Tooltips for items in the Downloads window are now restored after restarting Camino.
    • It is no longer possible to drag the site icon of the about:blank page.
    • Menu separators in the Bookmark Bar are no longer focusable.
    • Menu separators in the Bookmark Bar no longer show <Menu Separator> when being dragged.
    • Command-click on a bookmark in the Bookmark Bar now respects the shift key toggle.
    • The “View Page Source” menu item now respects the shift key toggle.
    • Camino now partially respects the Mozilla preference for setting the backspace key behavior.
    • Holding down modifier keys while menus are open now reveals several alternate menu items:
      • “Close All Windows” (when option is held)
      • “Force Reload” (when shift is held)
      • “Reload All Tabs” (when option is held)
      • “Force Reload All Tabs” (when option and shift are held)
      • “Minimize All” (when option is held)
      • “Zoom All” (when option is held)
      • “Bookmark Current Page” (without an intermediate dialog, when shift is held)
      • “Bookmark Current Tabs as Tab Group” (without an intermediate dialog, when shift is held)
      • “Open in New Tabs/Open in New Windows” (in Bookmarks menus, when command is held)
    • Overhauled menu item locations and titles:
      • Renamed the “Go” menu to “History”.
      • Moved the “Camino Feedback” menu item to the Camino menu.
      • Moved the “Search The Web” menu item to the File menu and renamed it to “Search the Web…”
      • Moved the “Get Info” menu item to the View menu and renamed it to “Page Info” or “Bookmark Info,” depending on whether the Bookmarks Manager is showing.
      • Moved the “Show History” menu item to the History menu.
      • Renamed “Add Page to Bookmarks…” menu item to “Bookmark Current Page…” and changed the keyboard shortcut from Cmd-D to Cmd-K (keeping Cmd-D for legacy purposes).
      • Moved the “Local Network Services” sub-menu to the Bookmarks menu, and renamed it to “Bonjour”.
      • Renamed the “About Local Network Services” menu item to “About Bonjour”.
    • The initial focus is now set correctly in the sheets related to storing passwords in the Keychain.
    • The “Never Save” button in the Keychain sheet can be selected using Command-N
    • The escape key can now be used to cancel operations in the content area when the page is not loading (e.g., FAYT, certain advanced bookmarklets).
    • The escape key will now close the Preferences window.
    • Camino now remembers the state of the toolbar in the Preferences window across launches.
    • Close buttons on tabs and on the pop-up blocker bar now give mouse hover feedback.
    • The browser window’s toolbar is now icon-only by default.
    • Clicking on the lock icon in the location bar now pops up the menu to allow showing page info or the certificate information for the site.
    • The down arrow now triggers the auto-complete drop-down if the cursor is already at the end of the Location bar.
    • Added a menu item to make web page text return to the default font size after the user has increased or decreased the size.
    • Command-+ now behaves the same as Command-= in all cases.
    • The toolbar icon that opens and closes the Bookmarks Manager now changes to reflect the state of the Bookmarks Manager.
    • Hovering over the site icon, lock, or feed icon in the location bar will now show the pointing (arrow) cursor in most cases.
    • Polished the user interface in the Bookmark Info panel.
    • Fixed an issue where dragging site icons from tabs to the Location bar wouldn’t work if focus was outside the Location bar.
    • Updated the network error pages and the about:config warning to fit in better with the overall appearance of Camino and Mac OS X.
    • Bookmark menu folders’ titles now indicate their intended actions—opening in new tabs or tabs in a new window—when the Command key is held down.
  • Web Page Interaction
    • Camino now has built-in spell-checking in web page text fields and uses the Mac OS X system dictionaries.
    • Ad-blocking has been further improved.
    • Camino now detects web feeds (RSS/Atom) on web pages and offers to pass the feeds to your default feed reader.
