For the most part, Camino localization is governed by the policies of the caminol10n project. In some cases, however, the Camino Project itself supplies additional policies or guidelines, and those will be listed below.

Localization Policies for Bookmarks and Search Engines

Camino includes many bookmarks that have a en-US focus and might not be relevant to other locales. To address this, we've created this document to list which bookmarks should be localized and which should remain, despite their en-US focus.

Removing, Changing, and Adding Bookmarks

At no time should a bookmark be removed, changed, or added without prior approval (as outlined in the Exceptions section), unless the bookmark is explicitly mentioned in a section below.

At no time should any localizer change any link in our default bookmarks to contain any sort of revenue sharing code or method, including those in the Shopping section.

Exceptions

With all great guidelines come exceptions. If you believe there is a specific site which should be part of the default bookmarks for your specific language, please file a bug in Bugzilla (under Camino::Translations) with your proposed changes, and the Camino team will evaluate it.

Note: When you propose a bookmark for inclusion, you should consider a number of factors about the site: site design, the use of pop-ups, and “sniffing” practices that lead to a bad Camino experience.

Bookmarks

Mac News & Support / Mac Software

In the Bookmarks Menu under Mac News & Support, the “Apple - Support” URL may be localized to use the most appropriate locale for your localization. For more information on which URL is appropriate, please see: http://www.apple.com/support/country/

Likewise, the “Apple - Downloads” URL may be localized to use the most appropriate locale if one exists.

If there is no Apple support or download page for your locale, these bookmarks should be left as-is.

Macworld also has locale-specific sites. If one exists for your locale, or a locale similar to yours, you may change this bookmark.

All other URLs should remain unchanged despite their en-US focus.

N.B. VersionTracker was replaced by MacUpdate for Camino 2.1.

Shopping

Under the Shopping category in the Bookmarks Menu, the Amazon.com, craigslist, and eBay links may be localized. If no localized versions of those sites exist for your locale, these bookmarks should remain en-US. However, you may remove craigslist from the default bookmarks if the site is not active in your locale.

You may also localize the Amazon.com link in the Bookmark Bar using the same guidelines above.

Social

Under the Social category in the Bookmarks menu, all links may be changed to link to locale or language specific versions of those websites. However, no links should be changed to point to other websites than those four.

Note that Flickr and LiveJournal currently auto-localize depending on a user's accept-language header. These should not be changed unless there is a specific localized URL to link to.

Tech News

The bookmarks in this tab group should remain unchanged, with the exception of Macworld which may be localized per the instructions above.

Google

Camino contains two links to Google, one in the Bookmarks menu, one in the Bookmark Bar. These links may not be localized. Google auto-detects your language using the settings from System Preferences.

Wikipedia

Camino now contains a link to the English Wikipedia in its Bookmarks menu. This link may be localized to the relevant Wikipedia.

Google Maps

The Google Maps link in the Bookmarks menu may be changed to the site with the closest appropriate TLD (e.g., maps.google.it), using the SSL (https://) version if available. If an appropriate site does not exist for your locale, this bookmark should remain untouched; Google will auto-detect the current language.

Yahoo

The Yahoo link may be changed to link to the most appropriate locale available on http://world.yahoo.com/. When available, please link to a yahoo.com URL rather than a yahoo.TLD URL (i.e., fr.yahoo.com instead of yahoo.fr).

Camino Info

Nothing in the Camino Info folder in the Bookmark Bar may be changed.

News

In the Bookmark Bar, the BBC and Yahoo! News sites may be localized, along with their titles. When localizing Yahoo! News, please keep “news” in the URL rather than localizing it (e.g., use it.news.yahoo.com instead of it.notizie.yahoo.com).

Google News will auto-localize the URL but localizers should change the bookmark title to match their locale (e.g., Google Actualités).

The NYTimes and Guardian links may not be changed.

The MSNBC link may be changed only by following the Exceptions rules above.

Translate this Page (new in 2.0)

Translate this Page is a “bookmarklet” that uses Google Translate to translate the current page into another language. Google Translate automatically detects the "from" language of the web page and automatically detects "to" language based on your browser settings. Translators should localize the title of this bookmark.

N.B. If language auto-detection does not appear to work for you, use the following URL (replacing tl=sv with tl=yourlang): javascript:void(location.href='http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=sv&u='+location.href)

Search Engines

Camino includes three default search options in its search bar: Google, Google Images, and Search this Site. Localizers may not localize these URLs. Google auto-detects your language using the settings from System Preferences. However, localizers should localize the titles of these options (e.g. Google Bilder for German).

As with bookmarks, any additions, deletions, or changes to the included search engines are governed by the exceptions policy at the top of this document.
