QA:Camino 2.1.x and Java

From Camino Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Starting with version 2.1, Camino no longer includes a built-in Java plug-in, and also disables Java by default. If you need to use Java, you will need to install a Java plug-in yourself and then enable Java in Camino’s Web Features preference pane.

If you are using Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5, you should install the Java Embedding Plugin. If you are using Mac OS X 10.6 or 10.7, Camino will use Apple’s Java Plug-In 2, which is included when you install Java on Mac OS X (Java is an optional install on Mac OS X 10.7).

Note: Due to changes in the version of Apple’s Java Plug-In 2 included with the most recent Mac OS X Java Updates on Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.7, the plug-in will not load in Camino.

If you are using Mac OS X 10.6, you can install the Java Embedding Plugin as described below. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to use Java with Camino 2.1 on Mac OS X 10.7. Bug 701968 is tracking this problem.

Installing the Java Embedding Plugin

  1. Download the latest version of the Java Embedding Plugin (0.9.7.5 as of November 30, 2011)
  2. A ZIP archive named JavaEmbeddingPlugin0.9.7.5.zip will be present in your downloads folder (often the Desktop on Mac OS X 10.4, or the Downloads folder in your Home folder on Mac OS X 10.5 and above); double-click on this archive to expand it.
  3. Expanding the archive will produce a folder named JavaEmbeddingPlugin0.9.7.5; open this folder and the Binaries folder that is inside.
  4. Open your Camino profile folder (~/Library/Application Support/Camino, where ~ is your home folder)
  5. Drag the contents of the Binaries folder from step 3 into the Internet Plug-Ins folder that is present in your Camino profile.
  6. You may now move the JavaEmbeddingPlugin0.9.7.5.zip file and the JavaEmbeddingPlugin0.9.7.5 folder to the Trash.
  7. Quit Camino.
  8. Relaunch Camino and check the “Enable Java” checkbox in the Web Features pane of Camino’s preferences.

Installing Java Plug-In 2

On Mac OS X 10.6, Java is installed by default. Check with Software Update in the Apple menu to make sure your installation of Java is up-to-date.

On Mac OS X 10.7, Java is not installed by default. If you do not already have Java installed due to another application that requires Java, you can install the latest version of Java by downloading the package from Apple’s website and running the installer inside.
