About Camino 1.1 Alpha 2

Camino 1.1 Alpha 2 is a heavily-updated version of the only native Mac OS X browser using Mozilla.org’s Gecko HTML rendering engine. Notable improvements include enhanced tabbed browsing (“single window mode”), integration with the Mac OS X spell-checking system, detection of RSS/Atom feeds, an improved design for the “blocked pop-up” notification, enhanced options for cookies and downloads, and a resizable search field in the toolbar. This release also includes enhancements in speed, security, and rendering accuracy brought by version 1.8.1 of the Gecko rendering engine.

Note that Camino 1.1 Alpha 2 is in the “alpha” stage, which means it is still under active development. We feel that it is usable on a day-to-day basis and is a large improvement over Camino 1.0, but you may still experience bugs and some functionality may not work entirely as intended. The goal of this early release is to demonstrate the team’s progress and to allow users to report problems early in the development cycle.

Camino 1.1 Alpha 2 shares the same code base as Firefox 2.0, both being based on version 1.8.1 of Gecko, and thus shares many of the security fixes and Gecko improvements that are in that version of Firefox.

Due to changes in the feature set, Camino 1.1 Alpha 2 no longer supports Mac OS X 10.2. We advise users still running Mac OS X 10.2 to download Camino 1.0.3 (release notes).

Features in Camino 1.1 Alpha 2

The following changes and improvements have been made since the Camino 1.1 Alpha 1 release.

General

  • Camino no longer displays wyciwyg:// strings for generated URLs.
  • Improved performance when deleting a large number of bookmarks.
  • Status bar text generated by mousing over links now takes precedence over status bar messages generated by network traffic.
  • Fixed a crash related to using "Find" immediately after switching to Camino.
  • Camino now uses the active user interface localization for its user agent locale.
  • When the accept-language string contains only “generic” English, Camino now adds US English to the string in order to work around broken web servers.
  • When viewing a file on a local disk, Camino now uses the file's actual icon as the site icon.

Bookmarks

  • Disabled the '+' and sort menu-buttons in bookmark collections where they are not relevant.
  • When viewing a context menu on the folder that is set as your Dock menu, the “Use as Dock Menu” item will now be checked.
  • When the "Use as Dock Menu" item is checked, choosing it will now reset your Dock Menu to the default folder.
  • Camino now prevents entry of spaces in bookmark keywords.
  • Items in the bookmarks bar now darken momentarily when opened by clicking or by using the keyboard shortcuts.
  • Camino now supports the import of iCab 3 bookmarks.
  • Camino now makes a backup copy of the bookmarks file on startup if the file is not corrupted.
  • Camino now tries to use a backup copy of the bookmarks file if the original bookmarks file appears to be corrupt on startup.
  • When Camino restores bookmarks from a backup, it displays an alert with details on how to send information to the Camino team.
  • Context and action menu items are no longer disabled when the first item in History search results is selected.
  • When dragging bookmarks from an external source (e.g. Safari) into the Bookmark Manager, Camino now copies the bookmarks instead of moving them.
  • Added a "Reveal in Bookmark Manager" contextual menu item for bookmarks in the Bookmark Bar, inline search results, and the Top Ten List.
  • The last-used location for the Add Bookmarks sheet is now remembered across launches.
  • Command-F now focuses the bookmarks search field in the Bookmarks Manager.
  • Fixed an issued introduced in Camino 1.1a1 which sometimes prevented bookmarking single pages.
  • Bookmark keywords are now recognized case-insensitively.

Downloading

Localization

Preferences

  • Polished the layout and terminology in each preference pane.
  • The proportional font hint text in the Appearance preference pane now matches the serif or sans-serif font choice.

Privacy & Security

  • The buttons in the dialog for connecting to a site whose identity can't be verified are now labeled "Always Accept," "Don't Connect" and "Accept Once."
  • If a web page contains multiple login forms, Camino will now auto-fill your username and password in all of them.
  • Camino can now read passwords stored in the Keychain by Safari and will use Safari passwords if no passwords have been saved for the site by Camino.
    • Camino versions older than 1.1a2 will not be able to read passwords modified or created in Camino 1.1a2 or later versions.
    • Using “Reset Safari” will delete any passwords saved by Camino 1.1a2 or later that have been used in Safari.
  • Camino now distinguishes between HTTP auth passwords and web form passwords.

Tabs

  • Camino now has a preference to save a list of all active tabs and windows on quit and will periodically save the list during browsing.

User Interface

  • Audited the validation of toolbar buttons and menu items. The changes include:
    • The "Add" button in the "Edit Exceptions List..." sheet in the Web Features preference pane is now properly validated at all times.
    • Text-only back and forward toolbar buttons are now enabled and disabled correctly.
    • The "View Source", "Fill Form", and "Email Page Location" menu items and toolbar buttons are now disabled for all about: locations.
    • Various menu items and toolbar buttons are now disabled when viewing binary content, like images.
    • The "Print" toolbar button is now validated correctly.
    • Relevant menu items are now disabled when sheets or dialogs are frontmost.
  • The "Zoom" widget in the title bar and the “Zoom” menu item now zoom the window to fit the current page's content instead of making the window full-screen. Holding down the shift key toggles the old behavior of maximizing to fill the screen.
  • Camino now uses a native search field in the Bookmarks Manager.
  • Added alternate menu items to the "Reload" and "Reload All" menu items which perform a "Force Reload" when the shift key is pressed.
  • Dragging a bookmark, a folder or a tab group from the bookmarks bar to the tab bar now respects the shift key toggle for loading in the background.
  • The search field on the toolbar and the search item in the context menu now respect the command key toggle for opening in a new tab/window and the shift key toggle for loading in the background.
  • Menu items for recently visited pages in the History menu now respect the command key toggle for opening in a new tab/window and the shift key toggle for loading in the background.
  • Tab groups in the Bookmarks menu now respect the command key toggle for opening in a new tab/window and the shift key toggle for loading in the background.
  • Closing the bookmark info panel with the escape key now cancels any incomplete edits.
  • The text of certain security dialogs now contains “Camino” instead of “(null)”.
  • The first item in each preference pane is no longer focused unless it is a text field or the user has Full Keyboard Access activated.

Web Page Interaction

  • Fixed an issue in Camino 1.1a1 where pop-ups were sometimes blocked without showing the pop-up blocker.
  • Control-clicking on a word in a text field now selects the word, so the cursor no longer has to be in a misspelled word for spelling suggestions to work.

Known Issues in Camino 1.1 Alpha 2

  • Some users report have reported that their bookmarks have disappeared when relaunching Camino and the Camino’s bookmarks backup file is corrupted. Users are advised to make regular copies of their bookmarks.
  • Some users have experienced a situation where pages would appear not to load after clicking on a link. In this case, resizing the browser window will cause the page to display properly.
  • The version of RealPlayer released in May 2006, version 10.1.0 (v400), causes Camino to crash when viewing any Real content. Real has released RealPlayer 10.1.0 (v412) to address this issue. Users should re-download RealPlayer and verify (using the application’s About window) that it is version 412 before launching Camino.
  • Microsoft’s Windows Media Player (WMP) plugin causes major rendering issues in Camino. Since Microsoft has discontinued WMP on Mac OS X, Camino no longer supports the use of the WMP plugin; instead, all users should download the free Flip4Mac (F4M) plugin, version 2.1 or higher, from http://www.flip4mac.com/. Version 2.1 causes pages containing WMP content to become white when scrolled in Camino; there is currently no ETA for a fixed version of the F4M plugin.
  • Due to a bug in Mac OS X 10.3.x, Norwegian users of Camino will need to manually set their 'accept-language' string. To set the accept-language string, add the string user_pref("camino.accept_languages", "nb,nn,no,en"); to your user.js file, where the languages are listed in the order in which you’d prefer them if a server can send content in multiple languages. (In this example, you want Bokmål first, then Nynorsk, then generic Norwegian, then English if none of the other three languages are available.) You may now launch Camino.
Apple fixed this bug in Mac OS X 10.4, so no work-arounds are necessary.
  • Camino erroneously claims that the default Japanese and Traditional Chinese fonts are “missing” when they are actually installed; this is due to a mismatch between Carbon and Cocoa font names. Changing these fonts using the Camino user interface will result in incorrect fonts being chosen and will cause some characters to fail to display. Users should either keep the default fonts or change the font preferences manually, ensuring the Carbon versions of the font names are used.
  • Some users have experienced an issue where downloading files will cause Camino to hang when Quicksilver is installed. Users can work around this issue by either disabling indexing of the Desktop in Quicksilver or by setting the default download location to somewhere other than the Desktop in Camino’s Downloads preferences.
