Camino is an open source web browser developed with a focus on providing the best possible experience for Mac OS X users.

—Camino Project mission statement

After every major release, the Camino Project collectively plans the features that will be added or improved in the next release. These development priorities are communicated to the public via this document, the Camino Roadmap.

This roadmap is a look at where Camino is headed over the next year, including major new releases and security releases for current versions of Camino. The roadmap for 2008 can be found here.

Camino 1.6.x

Camino 1.6.x releases are security and stability updates for Camino 1.6 code and come from the MOZILLA_1_8_BRANCH. In general, no new features will be added to these releases; changes allowed include those involving stability, security, localization, and regressions from earlier 1.6.x releases.

The current release in this series is Camino 1.6.10, which was released on September 29, 2009.

To nominate bugs for the next security/stability release, simply flag them in Bugzilla as "camino-1.6.11?". These bugs should either be regressions from a previous Camino 1.6.x release or serious bugs that exist in 1.6.x builds.

Camino 2.0

Camino 2.0 will be a new release off of the CAMINO_2_0_BRANCH, which branched Camino-specific code from the larger MOZILLA_1_9_BRANCH. The MOZILLA_1_9_BRANCH (Gecko 1.9) will bring major improvements to web page rendering on Mac OS X, such as better handling of fonts and text, form widgets, and plug-ins. This version of Gecko will also include improved compatibility with web standards and will require Mac OS X 10.4 or later. Significant new features include rearranging tabs by drag and drop, tab overview, full content zoom, better support for Full Keyboard Access in the browser window, enhanced AppleScript capabilities, a new crash reporting system that works on all Macs, and Growl notifications for completed downloads.

The first preview, Camino 2.0 Alpha 1, was released on October 21, 2008; the second preview, Camino 2.0 Beta 1, was released on December 23, 2008; third preview, Camino 2.0 Beta 2, was released on February 27, 2009; the fourth preview, Camino 2.0 Beta 3, was released on June 4, 2009; the fifth preview, Camino 2.0 Beta 4, was released on September 18, 2009; and Camino 2 was released on November 18, 2009.

Camino 2.0.x

Camino 2.0.x releases are security and stability updates for Camino 2.0 code and come from the CAMINO_2_0_BRANCH. In general, no new features will be added to these releases; changes allowed include those involving stability, security, localization, and regressions from earlier 2.0.x releases.

The current release in this series is Camino 2.0.1, which was released on December 4, 2009.

To nominate bugs for the next security/stability release, simply flag them in Bugzilla as "camino-2.0.2?". These bugs should either be regressions from a previous Camino 2.0.x release or serious bugs that exist in 2.0.x builds.

Camino 2.1

Camino 2.1 will be a new release off of the MOZILLA_1_9_BRANCH. Camino 2.1 will have many improvements in the overall browsing experience, including improved location bar autocomplete, although features for this release are still just ideas.

Tentative Schedule

Camino releases have always been feature- and quality-driven, not dictated by dates. What follows are rough estimates for the dates of next major releases.

Camino 2.0 should be expected in mid-2009, and Camino 2.1 should follow by late 2009 or early 2010.
